Nearly 40% adults report using complementary and alternative medicine, also called CAM or TCAM. Doctors are embracing CAM therapies, too, often combining them with mainstream medical therapies — spawning the term “integrative medicine.” (Source: Mayoclinic.com). The market value only in the United States is worth $9 billion dollars. While CAM is growing fast in some countries such as Australia, the official World Health Organization position is that “health benefits of TCAM have not so far been fully assessed.
We caught up with Azita Angadj, one of the leading Middle East specialists of Bowen Therapy, an alternative therapy, to learn about Bowen and a professional path in alternative medicine.
How can you explain Bowen Therapy to an ordinary person?
Bowen Therapy is a holistic soft tissue Therapy that started in Australia. The core of this therapy is to reset the body to heal itself. This therapy can help any disharmony in the body, whether it is physical, psychological, emotional, or chemical, from mild to severe. It has its own simple way to bring the body in balance and harmony.
Who can benefit from Bowen Therapy?
Bowen Therapy is safe to use on anyone from new born, elderly, healthy sportive people to severely ill individuals. It can help any illness, disease, disorder, which are either musculoskeletal or related neuromuscular issues.
Who started Bowen Therapy and what is the story behind it?
Tom Bowen is the founder of this therapy. He believed that human body has the ability to heal itself. People can lose this ability with triggers such as stress, emotional distress, lack of sleep, unhealthy lifestyle, and may other reasons. When a person loses the ability to heal his or her own body, then something goes wrong.
Based on these assumptions, Tom Bowen wanted to bring back the body to a state where it is able to heal itself.
He searched for many years, experimenting with all kinds of therapies until one day he discovered that the body activates its own ability to heal itself, only once the total relaxation of the body is achieved. That is how the Bowen Therapy was born.
Many people have always asked him how did you invent such an amazing therapy and his response is that I didn’t invent anything because this was a gift of God.
Is Bowen Therapy a substitute or a complimentary solution to western medicine?
Bowen Therapy is used as alternative medicine when there is no other medical solution found for the problem. We also work a lot with Bowen Therapy as complementary therapy along with doctors and hospitals, because Bowen is demonstrating its benefits.
Bowen is a very non-invasive therapy where specific moves are made on ligaments, tendons or muscles which most likely activate the Golgi receptors and send signals to the brain, the neurological pathways, the fascia. So this method can be complementary to existing medical solutions.
How did you get involved in Bowen Therapy?
Well it’s a long personal story. My youngest son had speech difficulties that were caused by a traumatic experience at birth. I only realized that he could not speak when he was three years old. I tried every kind of therapy that could exist to help him. So I had spent five years taking him to all kinds of therapies until I found a fantastic therapist who helped my son to recover completely. I was so amazed by the work of this fabulous therapist that I decided to learn more about the healing therapy methods all over the world. I came across Bowen and as soon as my eyes were set on the book of Bowen Therapy, I knew this was what I had to learn and do. It was like “love at first sight” with this profession. Nine years later, I am still as passionate about this therapy as I was the first day I discovered it.
Till today, I am amazed by the effective results that Bowen therapy brings about in my clients. For me it is the most fulfilling job that could ever exist for me. I am so grateful to have come across such a wonderful gift of God.
Who can become a Bowen therapist? Is it for anyone or does a person need special talents?
Anyone who loves to help others can become a Bowen practitioner.
What is process for becoming a Bowen therapist? Where is the Accreditation from?
